Dangerous New Painkiller Creating Overdose Concerns

There is a new prescription drug that has come on the market and for the addict its effects are going to be deadly.  Zohydro is the name and this pill is 5-10 times more potent than hydrocodone (Vicoden).  They are also manufacturing this drug without the use of acetaminophen (Tylenol) that we see in other pain medications.

There are many red flags that addiction professionals are very weary of.  First of all this drug has no time release control like its sister drug OxyContin.  OxyContin is the most widely abused prescription drug.  After people started abusing the drug by snorting it, the pharmaceutical companies put controls on the pill itself so that it could not be crushed and taken intra-nasally.  Zohydro is not being introduced to the market this way, although they say it is being worked on to have a control put on the pill so that it can’t be ground down into powder and sniffed or injected.  When opiate pain medications are abused they often times result in overdose and death.  The addict needs more and more of the drug to get the desired euphoric feeling they are searching for and the body can’t support it.  The respiratory system shuts down and you stop breathing.
